Heroes Helping with Horsepower to host military appreciation day in Ethan

Daily Republic - 9/9/2022

Sep. 9—ETHAN, S.D. — Heroes Helping with Horsepower, an organization dedicated to helping empower, encourage and inspire United States military veterans, will be serving up a helping of fun Saturday, Sept. 10, in Ethan.

The all-day event is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Main Street in downtown Ethan.

The second-annual event is being held in honor and celebration of members of the military, according to Laura Klock, president and founder of Heroes Helping with Horsepower. Activities planned for the day include a rib cookoff, a car show, a motorcycle and ATV poker run and a silent auction and gift card raffle, among others.

Klock said she expects a good crowd.

"We got more than we expected (at last year's event)," Klock said, noting that the poker runs and the RibFest events proved very popular.

Klock said some slight adjustments have been made from last year, but the most significant is there will be no gate fee. The event is free and open to the public.

"We definitely don't want to deter anyone from coming down and enjoying everything," Klock said.

Proceeds from most of the activities will go toward the Heroes Helping with Horsepower Equine Therapy Program, unless otherwise noted. Some events, like the pancake breakfast, are fundraisers for other various organizations.

RibFest

The day will get underway at 8 a.m. with registration for the RibFest. Cooking for the event will continue all day, with judging set to be held at 5 p.m. The event will then open to the public at 5:30 p.m.

Bids to start the silent auction will be received until 9 p.m. Friday evening on the organization's Facebook page. Bidders can comment a bid amount in dollar increments. Those comments will be turned off at 9 p.m., and high bidders at that time will be responsible for payment on Saturday, Sept. 10.

Those highest bids will be the starting bid on the silent auction bid sheet on Saturday. Bidding will then proceed at the event until 7 p.m. Saturday. Checkout for the silent auction is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

The silent auction will be set up in the Ethan American Legion.
