Woodbridge unveils Veterans Garden

Pharos-Tribune - 9/8/2022

Sep. 8—Veterans assembled at WoodBridge Health Campus Thursday afternoon to celebrate the debut of the Veterans Garden.

The garden is a centerpiece of the campus, located at 602 Woodbridge Avenue, and greets visitors as they enter the parking area.

The garden is in the shape of a triangle which represents stability, said Alma Nieves, executive director of WoodBridge. Within the triangle is a flag bench painted by local muralist Sienna Urbina, stones that represent the branches of the military and a memorial for fallen soldiers. Red, white and blue lights will brighten and showcase the area at night.

Nieves had worked at the Indiana Veterans Home for a decade before she took a position with WoodBridge in January. She said that working with the veterans helped shape who she is as a person today and that inspired her idea for the garden.

Nieves approached Marla Spencer, a CNA at WoodBridge, with the idea of the Veteran's Garden to honor the residents who served.

Spencer, a member of the AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary at the Cpl. Humberto Sanchez Post #82621, called upon members of her community for help.

Home Depot also stepped up by providing Spencer advice and donating items to help complete the garden.

Before the ribbon cutting, Nieve presented a donation to the AMVETS as a thank you for their work with community veterans.

WoodBridge is using art and space to make their residents who are vets feel at home and comfortable. The garden is one aspect of that approach. Nieves called the bench that Urbana painted beautiful and said that another veteran inspired work, a mural inside the building, was progressing. The mural is being painted by local artist and vet Carrie Hayden.

"Nursing homes aren't just for the elderly," said Nieve. "We also offer aid for veterans. There are times when vets think they should just go to a veteran's home. You don't have to do that specifically because we provide that care in all the nursing homes. We take pride in making sure our veterans in the community are well taken care of here."

Logansport Mayor Chris Martin, the Logansport Cass County Chamber of Commerce, new Logan's Landing executive director Joe Brewer and many members of the AMVETS were on hand to celebrate the ribbon cutting and honor local vets.

Prior to the event, residents and guests were treated to a cookout and live music.
