Goldbeck lands endorsement from Congressman and fellow Marine veteran Seth Moulton

San Diego Union-Tribune - 1/17/2020

A Marine captain who left the military a few months ago earned what she says is a key endorsement in her dark horse candidacy to replace retiring San Diego Rep. Susan Davis.

Goldbeck, a Democrat, is challenging the presumptive Democratic front-runners in the 53rd Congressional District race, including San Diego City Council President Georgette Gómez and Sara Jacobs, a former Hillary Clinton adviser.

In a statement Friday, Goldbeck announced she'd won an endorsement from Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Massachusetts, a Marine combat veteran and member of the House Armed Services Committee.

Moulton said in a statement that Goldbeck is "someone you want on your side."

"I'm proud to endorse her," Moulton said.

In her statement, Goldbeck said that if elected she'd be the first LGBTQ+ woman veteran elected to Congress. With her background as a Marine combat engineer officer, Goldbeck has sought to position herself as a rational replacement for Davis, who serves on the House Armed Services Committee with Moulton.

Davis was first elected to Congress in 2000 in what was, at the time, the 49th District. The district, which was re-drawn as the 53rd in 2003, is home to more than 50,000 military veterans and an estimated 12,000 active-duty service members.

"It is imperative that we have a representative in Congress who not only understands the true cost of war, but who also has the leadership experience to hit the ground running," Goldbeck said in the statement.

Goldbeck isn't the only veteran running in the district's Democratic primary — Navy veteran Jose Caballero, who served as an enlisted nuclear electronics technician, also is running.

Goldbeck also announced endorsements from former Rep. Patrick Murphy, D-PA, who served as Army undersecretary in the Obama Administration, and retired Air Force Brigadier General Blaine Holt, who served as the deputy U.S. representative to NATO.

Goldbeck also was endorsed by the progressive political action committee VoteVets.

She did not get backing from the California Democratic Party, which endorsed Gómez. Gómez also garnered endorsements from several local and statewide unions, six members of Congress and much of the San Diego delegation to Sacramento, including Assemblyman Todd Gloria, Senate President Pro Tempore Toni Atkins and State Sen. Ben Hueso.

Jacobs also has earned endorsements from five members of Congress, from Lt. Governor Eleni Kounalakis, and from numerous city council members throughout the county.

At last count, Jacob had raised $316,000 for her campaign, leading fundraising in the district race. Gómez' total stands at about $200,000, while Goldbeck sits at $100,000.

Fourth-quarter filings are due at the end of January.
