Annual 5K to support officer mental health

Journal Inquirer - 9/19/2022

Sep. 19—EAST HARTFORD — Believe 208 will host its eighth annual Run for the Brave and Finest 5K race on Sunday to support mental health initiatives for police officers.

The yearly event began after the suicide of former East Hartford police officer Paul Buchanan in 2013.

"Since that tragic day, I've taken his message and tragic death and tried to help others in breaking the stigma and the silence behind the trauma that our police officers face each and every day," Buchanan's wife Tricia Buchanan said at a Town Council meeting in August.

Believe 208's mission is to be a trusted, influential source for first responders while bringing awareness to their mental health and safety.

The organization partners with the Connecticut Alliance to Benefit Law Enforcement, CABLE, to facilitate the run and other programs to support officers.

The group also helps officers who are struggling get in contact with counselors or treatment facilities.

This year's run takes place from 7 to 11 a.m. Sunday and begins at the Knights of Columbus on Main Street.

Registration for adults running the 5K race is $30 in advance and $35 on the day of the race. Children under 14 running the 5K have to pay $20. There will also be a special run for children for $15.

All proceeds benefit CABLE and help fund education and training resources for officers in need.

Other sponsors helping organize the event include Putnam Liquors, Dunkin' Donuts, First Choice Health Center, and Moment of Silence.

"I appreciate you bringing a sense of community here to East Hartford and rallying local businesses and local partners," Town Council member Harry Amadasun Jr. told Buchanan at the meeting.

Town Council Chairman Richard Kehoe added that this is one of his favorite events in the town.

Online registration for the run ends on Thursday at 11:59 p.m., but registration will be open on race day at 7 a.m. at the Knights of Columbus.

Collin covers South Windsor and East Hartford for the Journal Inquirer.
