World War II veteran honored by city

World War II veteran Richard Grove, 90, has been recognized by the New Smyrna Beach City Commission for decades of volunteer service to the city.

Mayor James W. Hathaway presented the Good Neighbor Award and proclamation to the honoree at the Nov. 14 commission meeting.

Nominated by Vice Mayor Jake Sachs, the award honors Mr. Grove for "consistently supporting the community by volunteering countless hours of his time in support of environmental efforts for smart growth, historic preservation, Intracoastal Waterways cleanup, volunteering at the Marine Discovery Center and teaching at the Canaveral National Seashore Park."

Most noteworthy, the proclamation read, has been Mr. Grove's "generous and devoted spirit of community, which has raised the consciousness of residents and community leaders alike."

The proclamation was bestowed for his actions "that clearly embodies those impeccable qualities found in a good neighbor and these actions have clearly set this wonderful citizen apart from his contemporaries and reflect greatly upon him."

In support of her father's nomination, Doreen Bentley pointed out that as a WWII veteran, he also was concerned about the disrepair of the Veterans Memorial near the Brannon Civic Center and was successful in getting the repairs needed.

Mr. Grove's accomplishments also include being one of the founding members of the Marine Discovery Center and a coastal marine naturalist for 20 years a the Canavwas presented to Read-Pattillo Elementary School and city finance director Althea Philord-Bradley received a certificate of achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting.

Read-Pattillo was recognized for achieving the nationally recognized Bronze Award from the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. The award was presented for the school's accomplishments in creating a healthier school, which only 17 other schools in Florida and only 323 nationwide earned.

Ms. Philord-Bradley received the highest form of recognition in government financing for excelling at governmental accounting and financial reporting.

Presentation of Mr. Grove's award was originally scheduled for the regular commission meeting June 27, but, due to the honoree traveling out of state, the presentation was postponed until Nov. 14.
