Charles R. "Toots" Smith, 92, of McDonald, died Wednesday, October 11, 2017, in his home, with his son by his side.He was born August 30, 1925, in McDonald, the youngest of three sons of the late Charles J. and Rose Marie Dehoux Smith.Mr. Smith was a member of Calvary United Presbyterian Church, now McDonald Presbyterian Church, since he was 10 years old.He was a heavy equipment operator for Ben Construction and was a life member of Operating Engineers Local 66.Mr. Smith was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theatre and participating in Campaign Rhineland and Central Europe. He and his two brothers were a rarity, all serving at the same time in World War II in different areas and divisions.He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 567 and American Legion Post 458, both of McDonald, Oakdale Lodge 669, Free and Accepted Masons of Oakdale, Royal Arch Chapter 150 and Ancient Accepted Scottish Rites Bodies in the Valley of Pittsburgh.One of his passions, other than family, was playing golf. He had a hole-in-one in 1985 on Pondarosa Golf Course No. 7, Par 3, 174 yards. He also liked fishing at Cross Creek Lake with his son.On July 17, 1948, in the Manse of Trinity United Presbyterian Church, McDonald, he married the love of this life, Dorothy Louise Mercier, who died April 7, 2013, after having been married almost 65 years.Surviving is his son, Charles L. "Tootie" Smith of McDonald.Mr. Smith also leaves behind his dog, Sweetie Pie.Deceased, in addition to his parents and wife, are his brothers, James and Merle Smith.Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in Thomas-Little Funeral Service Inc., 314 West Lincoln Avenue, McDonald, 724-926-2800, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 14.
