Civil War Veteran honored

Confederate soldier Larkin C. Taylor was honored with the Iron Cross Medal in a ceremony held Aug. 5 at Pendleton Cemetery in Doe Run.

The presentation was made by the Matthew Fontaine Maury Chapter #1768, Daughters of the Confederacy. The service was led by Pat Limpus, president of the Chapter and past president of the National Society Daughters of the Confederacy.

Following the welcome, invocation, Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag, Salute to the Missouri and Confederate Flags, Posting of Colors, and singing "Dixie," greetings were heard by Sheri Horton, Missouri Division vice president and Jeff Thompson, commander of the Society of Confederate Veterans (SVC). The service of Taylor was told by Cara Schneider Aldridge, chapter treasurer and third great-granddaughter.

John Bates, SCV explained the meaning of the Iron Cross and Pat Limpus dedicated it. Placing a Forsythia wreath and unveiling the Iron Cross on behalf of the chapter was Cara Akridge. The service concluded with the firing of a black powder rifle, all singing "Amazing Grace," benediction and taps.
