Things To Do - Support veterans, lawmakers at Peacemakers & Protectors Day

Stuart News - 5/10/2017

Next Tuesday, May 16, Jetson's TV and Appliances and Velde Ford will sponsor Peacekeepers & Protectors Day to honor active and retired law enforcement and military.

The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Velde Ford in Vero Beach.

Exhibitors will include local veterans groups, the Indian River County Historical Society and the American Institute of Architects. Refreshments will be served.

Jetson is donating a queen-size Serta mattress set valued at $1,600 to be raffled off by The Veterans Council of Indian River County. Tickets are $1 each, or six tickets for $5.

Donald Kirisits, territory manager for Serta Simmons, will attend the event to answer questions about sleeping and purchasing a bed.

"A bed can really change the way you feel. It can change your life," said Kirisits. He added that the mattress Jetson's is donating is one of the company's best sellers that combines a traditional support system with the new technology of gel-infused memory foam for a cooler, softer sleep.

Catherine Caddell, director of public affairs for Indian River Veterans Council said that 100 percent of the proceeds from the raffle will be used for the group's transportation program.

The Council owns three wheelchair-accessible buses used to transport veterans, free-of-charge, to local medical appointments and to the VA Medical Center in West Palm Beach. The program is funded through donations.

"It's a wonderful program," said Caddell, "And it's a very easy way to say 'thank-you' to all of our vets." The buses run Monday through Friday, with three pick-up locations in the county. Call 772-226-1695 for reservations.

"This is the first time we've sponsored an event off-site," said John Jetson, owner of Jetson's and Vietnam Air Force veteran. "We are happy to be partnering with Velde Ford to salute those who protect our community and our country. We hope everyone comes out next Tuesday out to show their support for our Peacemakers and Protectors."

Members of the Veterans Council will promote Veterans in the Classroom, which offers Veterans Day, Memorial Day, and Americanism programs free of charge to local schools.

Americanism includes short films and demonstrations by local veterans about the Pledge of Allegiance, the "Star-Spangled Banner," how to properly display and care for the U.S. flag and how to fold the U.S. flag.

Architects from the America Institute of Architects (AIA) will provide free consultations about home renovations. Please call 772-370-9464 to schedule an appointment in advance.

"I've done renovations to provide better access and barrier-free living for veterans with mobility issues," said John Foster, president of the local chapter of AIA, adding that they will provide free advice to anyone – not just veterans – during the event, including advice on working with contractors.

Dr. Ann Roccon, head of the Interior Design Department at Indian River State College, is bringing students to answer interior design questions.
