Jasper County Veterans Affairs talks tour bus, approves advertising

Newton Daily News - 3/9/2017

March 09--The Jasper County Commission of Veterans Affairs gathered for its regular meeting Wednesday afternoon at the County Annex Building.

Director Kurt Jackson reviewed the status of the commission's tour bus to the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown on March 15. The bus is paid for through the county, and lunches will be provided for the tour group, he said.

The veterans home provides long-term care for veterans and their spouses or widows. At the time of the meeting, 30 out of the 36 seats on the bus had been filled.

The commission approved $500 to go toward Jerry Yellin's stop in Jasper County in April. Yellin is a retired Army Air Corps captain who served in World War II. His visit will include a stop at Newton DMACC and is open to the public. Yellin is sharing his story to help veterans who are battling post-traumatic stress disorder.

Jasper County Treasurer Doug Bishop briefly joined the meeting via speakerphone to go over the logistics of Yellin's visit, which will include stops at area schools in Baxter and Newton. Mental health counselors and veterans activists will also be available during Yellin's stop in Jasper County, Bishop said.

In other business, the commission approved the motion to reimburse American Legion Post 111 in Newton for food that will be provided on March 24 as part of the Jasper County Vietnam Veterans meal.

In addition, Jackson made plans to set up a booth for veterans at DMACC's job/career fair on March 29. He said he would like to include Home Base Iowa at the event, too.

Much of the latter half of Wednesday's meeting was spent discussing veterans affairs advertising. To reach out to veterans in Jasper County, the commission approved $500 in advertising.

Multiple advertising strategies were discussed, and Jackson will make the final decision. Commissioner Marta Ford said a trial and error method of advertising will help decide what works best.

Further advertising for veterans affairs, in the form of ink pens, was also approved. The commission voted to order 1,000 customized pens from Maxim Advertising. Commissioner Jerry Nelson said Maxim's pens have worked well for him in the past as an advertising tool.

The commission is scheduled to meet again on April 5.
