Veterans, American Legion 100th anniversary committee to meet Wednesday

Jul. 26--Veterans and committee members planning for the American Legion's 100th anniversary celebration in Schuylkill County will meet Wednesday.

Russell Stump, deputy District 13 commander for the American Legion, said organizers will finalize plans at 6:30 p.m. at the Schuylkill Haven American Legion Post 38 at 229 Parkway in Schuylkill Haven.

They're prepping for festivities for the 100th milestone, which will feature Joe Cocco, a member of Post 792 in Shenandoah and the 2013 American Legion state commander, as well as keynote speaker. L. Marc Burlile Sr., who serves as District 13 commander.

Stump said a cantata has also been added to the event lineup.

The celebration is slated from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.Sept. 7 at Island Park in Schuylkill Haven with vendors, exhibits and live music. Food and refreshments will be available to purchase, while admission and parking are free. Anniversary mugs and T-shirts featuring the 24 posts in District 13 are being sold.

Event planners welcome to attend Wednesday's meeting include post members, auxiliary, Sons of the American Legion and American Legion Riders.

"The American Legion was founded in March 1919 in Paris, France, by U.S. World War I military personnel stationed there who were dedicated to four pillars of service and advocacy: veterans, military personnel, youth and patriotic values," according to the website www.legion.org.
