Parade honors Corning veterans

Corning Observer - 11/15/2018

Nov. 14--A parade honoring the military veterans of the United States marched down Solano Street on Veterans Day, Sunday, Nov. 11, as dozens of residents lining the town's main fairway watched and cheered.

Cub, boy and girl scouts lead the parade with American and state flags in hand.

This year's parade grand marshal was longtime Corning resident Bob Lester. The 86-year-old veteran served in the Korean War in the 31st Infantry Regiment 7th Division from 1952 to 1954. He had been married to his wife, Pem, for one week when Uncle Sam called him to fight in the war.

"All the boys were called to fight and that is what we did," Lester said. "I was at the Battle of Old Baldy on the 38th parallel when it got hit. Both myself and Jim (Darrow) came out of that war lucky to be alive."

Darrow was also a feature of the parade, as was the Corning High School band performing patriotic music, horseback riders, a long line of fancy Corvettes, Miss and Young Miss Olive City, decorated vintage tractors, a float of local veterans, Ron Warner and his vintage car bearing two large American flags, American Legion Raisner Post 45 and Auxiliary, Corning and other fire engines, and more.

Following the parade, local veterans organizations hosted a luncheon at the Veterans Memorial Hall in Corning.

City Councilman Dave Demo said the American flags waving from light posts in Corning on Veterans Day were purchased and donated my Delores May and placed on the posts by volunteers.
